When I moved from North Caldwell, New Jersey, to Dubuque 25 years ago, Mario’s was the first restaurant I visited. After a wonderful dinner that was just like the Italian food I grew up on; Mario came to the table and in his big, booming voice said, “How was’a your’a dinner?” I jokingly answered, “mezzo e mezzo,” which means “half and half” in Italian and is a way of saying good but maybe not so much. Mario looked at me for a few seconds and then said, “Ahh, go back’a East!”

💯! We are so grateful for the impact that Mario has left on our community and the one Mario’s continues to make through the wonderful people who are making sure the same values that started it all are still at its core! ♥️ 🍝

I miss Mario’s with all my ❤️. Was in Dallas this week on business and had a salad at a local Italian restaurant that closely resembled the salad at Mario’s.

The traditionally copper water-pot was called a conca in Abruzzo; it was cleaned with sand. The woman rolled a handkerchief or piece of cloth to make a soft pad, which she placed on her head before the conca.
